General Information

The objectives of the Ramblers' Association (Registered Charity No. 1093577) include the preservation of natural beauty, protection of the footpaths and provision of access to open country.

Members who are willing to help with footpath clearance and conservation work should phone the Lower Mole Countryside management project, 020 8541 7144, which organises working parties in our local countryside.

Membership of the Group is restricted to paid up members of the Ramblers, but prospective members are welcome to attend a few rambles before deciding to join. Participation in Kingston Group holidays requires RA Membership. Membership application forms are obtainable from the Membership Secretary. Members of other Ramblers groups who require a Kingston Group programme should send four 2nd class stamps for a year's supply, together with three C5 size (162 x229 mm) self seal self addressed envelopes and a note of their membership number and group to the Membership Secretary.

If you would prefer to receive future programmes by email, as MS Word attachments, instead of by post, please e-mail your request to: krmailing@yahoo.co.uk, including your name and first line of your address for identification. No action is required if you would like to continue to receive the programme by post. If you prefer to be taken off the mailing list and not receive future programmes, please  contact the Membership Secretary.

Information about Rambles

Please note: People attend rambles and other events at their own risk.

Footpaths and fields may be rough, muddy and wet: wear boots or strong lace-up shoes. On roads with no footpath, keep well to the right, unless the leader advises otherwise, e.g. when approaching a blind bend. Keep strictly to the path when crossing ploughed or planted fields. Dogs must be on a lead through crops or where livestock is present and always be under the owner's control.

Do not force the pace by walking ahead of the leader. Look round now and then, especially at junctions, to see that the person behind you is still in sight: alert the leader if the party becomes too spread out. If you become separated and are lost, use your whistle to attract attention, and do not follow-on unless you are sure of the route.  Let the leader know if you decide to break off before the end of the ramble.

Carry food and drink, especially when a picnic lunch is indicated. When the lunch stop is a pub, food is usually available but not always. On the pub premises, do not consume drink you have brought with you, even in the garden. If you do not want to remove muddy boots, cover them with plastic bags.

O/S Maps used on Walks will be indicated by either: LR - Landranger (1:50,000 scale), EX - Explorer  (1:25,000 scale)

All mileages are approximate. Other information about rambles may be obtained by phoning the leaders. In the event of severe weather, participants should phone the leader to make sure that the walk will take place.

Mobile phone numbers of leaders may be included in the programme for use in emergencies, such as getting lost on the way to a start point.

Transport to Rambles

Starting times of Saturday and Weekday Rambles are usually arranged to fit in with train or bus timetables. Check actual times, in case of errors, engineering works or alterations. Timetables may have changed since the programme was completed. If train or bus times are altered, or delays are expected, contact the leader. Leaders will not wait more than 10 minutes for late arrival of public transport, unless they have agreed to do so.

Sunday Rambles usually involve meeting at Surbiton Clock Tower (SCT) to share cars to the starting point. Drivers are asked to go first to the meeting point, unless it is a long way off their routes. Normally there will be car seats for all, but this cannot of course be guaranteed. Passenger are requested to contribute towards the cost of the fuel and 10p per mile is suggested, for both outward and return journeys. It is expected that this money will be offered by passengers and accepted by drivers.

Some Saturday and Weekday Rambles also involve meeting at a meeting point to share cars, in which case the same guidelines apply as for Sunday. CDR in programme is short for Cheap Day Return.
